As the temperature continues to rise and the daylight hours extend, we are all getting the itch for some fun in the sun! This is a coveted time for those of us who live in areas where the beach is only an option for about 3 months out of the year. That being said, it’s important not to let our excitement get the best of us and remember to protect ourselves from the strong sun rays and heat while enjoying the company of friends and family. Check out these 5 tips to a happy and healthy beach day!
- Wear sunglasses and a hat. Not only does this give you an excuse to go shopping to accessorize your beachwear, but it also helps protects your eyes, head, neck, face, and ears from the harmful rays of the sun. Look for a hat with a large brim and sunglasses that protect from UVA and UVB rays.
- Use sunscreen. Sunscreen can help protect your skin from developing skin cancer when used correctly and consistently and with an appropriate SPF level. It’s important to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, so remember to read the label for suggested application times.
- Drink water. It’s important to stay hydrated especially when the hot temps make you sweat! Help cool down your body by drinking some H2O. If you want to add a little flavor to your water try slicing up lemons and limes and adding them to your water bottles or pitcher.
- Bring healthy snacks. Everyone loves packing a few snacks for a day out, so plan ahead and prepare your own. Instead of reaching for bags of chips at the store, pickup some fresh berries, watermelon, or pineapple and remember to wash and/or chop accordingly before heading out. Veggie sticks and dip are another great snack to add to the cooler. You can even go old school and put together some ants on a log. Bringing your own snacks helps you make better food choices when you’re out for a long day trip, and you’ll find these healthy choices quite refreshing!
- Exercise your mind and body. You’ve got your friends together, now what?! Beach toys aren’t just for kids- remember to pack your favorite active gear! A lot of beaches have nets setup, so throw a volleyball in the car and you’re all set for a few rounds of beach volleyball. If that’s not an option at your favorite beach destination you can bring a frisbee or baseball/football for some catch. If sports aren’t your cup of tea consider exercising your mind with a word search book or a card game.
Regardless if you make it to the beach once over the summer or everyday it’s important to keep yourself healthy and protect your body. If you are planning a trip with a group, you can assign different tasks to each person to make sure you’ll have everything you need. Most of all don’t forget to relax and have fun- it’s summertime!
