5 Ways to Stay Healthy on Vacation!

VACATION.  The thing we work so hard for and dream about every day.  Personally, when I have a trip planned I can hardly think about anything else.  From packing to dining reservations I’m too preoccupied to get anything done when I have vacation on the brain!  And then questions start popping into your head…How am I going to look in pictures…Will my favorite bathing suit fit?!  You are quickly pushed into the workout grind and start watching what you eat.  Although this tends to be a great motivation, I find that once I’ve reached my destination all the hard work gets thrown out the window at the first sight of a tempting treat.  We’ve all been guilty of that!  So to help keep everyone on track, here are a few ways to stay healthy on vacation while still indulging in the local culture and fare.

  1. You Time.  Unless you’re flying solo for an adventurous trip for one, most likely you will be surrounded by family or friends.  Although these vacations are exciting and fun filled, you may tend to get stressed or overwhelmed at some point.  To avoid this from happening plan a few hours for getting away and doing something for yourself.  Did you spot a cozy hammock by the water or a local cooking class?  Whatever it is that tickles your fancy pick a day and time and GO FOR IT!  On my most recent trip I scheduled a massage and it gave me the perfect amount of time to relax and center myself.  By the time it was over I felt rejuvenated and good to go on some quality family time! Hammock Picture
  2. Utilize the Amenities. Many hotels and resorts offer various free amenities to guests, so before you go I suggest checking these out online or by calling. You might be surprised at some of things that are offered!  Free access to fitness centers is a popular advantage to staying at many hotels.  This is a great way to keep up your routine while you’re away even if you only hit the gym a day or two.  Also you may want to try something new, since you are exploring a new place after all, so maybe doing laps in the pool might sound more appealing to you.  You could go for a run on the beach if there’s one nearby since most of us aren’t lucky enough to live beachfront year round.  Your hotel might even offer a walking tour which is the perfect combo to stay fit and learn about the surrounding area. exercise
  3. Pack the Goods. There’s no reason you can’t continue snacking on your favorite healthy treats while you’re away. Although some may not be the best to travel with there are plenty to choose from.  I love to snack on almonds and usually pack a can in my suitcase.  You can also throw in a few bananas, apples, or oranges too.  If you’re planning on working out or going for a run don’t hesitate bringing a pair of sneakers.  You can wear them on the plane if your suitcase is already busting at the seams!  My morning routine involves drinking a cup of hot water and lemon to cleanse and detox my body.  To ensure I could continue this I brought a bag of lemons with me on a recent trip just in case I wouldn’t be able to buy them locally. Lemon Pool
  4. H2O. I said it before and I’ll say it again…drink lots and lots of water! There are so many health benefits to drinking water and it’s available pretty much everywhere so there’s no excuse. If you stick to water you’ll avoid all the added sugar that many other beverages contain.  It also helps keep your body hydrated especially if you are visiting somewhere with a warm climate.  Your body will need more water in these places because you’ll be losing a lot of it when you perspire.  I drink water pretty much all day every day so when I want to enjoy a glass of wine during dinner or a cocktail poolside I allow myself that luxury. Drink Water
  5. Breakfast. Whether you think breakfast is the most important meal of the day or you’d call yourself a skeptic it is still an easy meal to keep on the healthy side. For many of us it is also the meal we are more likely to eat at the hotel if we are out exploring all day. Use this time to give your body the fuel it needs as it revs up for your day of adventure.  Fresh fruit with whole wheat toast is one of my favorite things to have in the morning and is usually pretty easy to find at breakfast hotspots when you’re traveling.  A few other options are oatmeal, yogurt with berries, or apple slices with peanut butter and sliced almonds on them.  I tend to load my plate full of all the native fruits available when I’m in a new place to see what I’m missing.  Breakfast is the time to take control of the first food you give your body so  you can start your day on the right foot! Helathy Breakfast

Vacation should be an exciting time filled with new activities and relaxation.  Don’t let thoughts of guilt flood your mind every time you want to try an exotic dessert or a tropical drink.  Part of the fun of traveling is experiencing new cultures including the cuisine and way of life.  Remember these tips to help keep you on track. If you plan ahead and pack what you need you will be able to continue your healthy lifestyle wherever you are!
