5 Ways to Get Active this Summer!

active summer

We all know physical activity is good for us, but often  that is easier said than done.  I live in New England and the weather here is less than ideal for outdoor activities the majority of the year.  I love the summer because it means longer days with more sun and warmer temps opening the door for the exploration of new exercise adventures!  So if you are looking to branch out this season, here are a few fun ways to get  and stay active this summer.

  1. Kayaking. There’s nothing better than spending some time out on the water in the summertime!  One of my favorite things to do is to go kayaking with my family.  I usually row in a two person kayak, but if you want some alone time then a one seater will do the trick.  This is a fun way to enjoy the water and keep your body moving at the same time!  Of course there are many other options you can try like canoeing, windsurfing, or paddle boarding (to name a few) that are also great ways to be active.
  2. Go for a hike. If you like being in touch with mother nature and want to explore a new place then going for a hike might be right up your alley. Check out trails in your area and invite friends to go with you.  It could turn into a fun day trip or even a weekend getaway!  If you have a dog, look for pet friendly trails so your canine friend can join you.  Hiking is a great way to fill your lungs with fresh air.  Just be sure to pack water bottles to keep you hydrated during your trek and a snack or two to keep you going.
  3. Gardening. This is actually a perfect way to get your body moving, enjoy the great outdoors and to inspire healthy eating! If you are not already a gardener it may be hard  to understand how demanding gardening is on your body, but it really works your muscles.  Planting different fruits, vegetables, and herbs provide the freshest ingredients for your meals so it’s a win-win!  While growing up my parents had us help in the gardens and I remember thinking how fun it was to be spending time with them and my siblings during the summer as I stuffed my face with freshly picked strawberries…I couldn’t help myself- THEY WERE DELICIOUS!
  4. Enjoy a swim. Jumping into the cool clean water is something both kids and adults dream about doing during those hot summer days! Whether you have access to a pool or are spending the day at the beach, take a dip in the water to help you cool off.  Playing in the pool with friends and family is a favorite past time for many people and most of us don’t  realize it helps keep us fit too!  If you want something more low key and less rowdy, swim laps to get your body moving.
  5. Take a Bike ride. One of my all time favorite activities growing up was biking with my friends at the seashore. I felt so much freedom  peddling up and down the neighborhood streets for hours.  Those days may have come and gone, but as an adult I still enjoy a good bike ride from time to time.  If you live somewhere that is bike friendly consider switching up your transportation when the weather permits or enjoy a casual bike ride in your down time.  Be sure to be safe on the road and check out the biking laws in your area.

Feeling adventurous yet??  These and many other options to get you out and moving are available to you right now!  The great thing is that these suggestions can be enjoyed solo or with friends and family.  Start with  one that works for you and begin exploring the possibilities.  I can’t think of a better or healthier way to spend the summer!
